"meditation with a preconceived purpose or notion is counter to the practice of meditation" .... which includes expecting to feel positive after finishing. Just go with it, day by day.

i have never heard any monk speak of seeing spirits while meditating.i think music can play a role as long as it is non intrusive.ur right the emptying of the mind is something that can be achieved but meditation with a preconceived purpose or notion is counter to the practice of meditation.ur not a noob its a good question.ur on the right track if ur practice is sincere, simple and if u feel positive result after u finish.

Quite right, I used to smoke myself a little before meditation to calm my mind (hard for me to do), it always helped. Lately though, due to personal reasons, I've been smoking alot more and now I've lost the ability to use the drug in a spiritual manner. Just hope I can get it back again.

getting mildly stoned for meditation is really not that bad from my own experience. as a matter of fact in some parts of north india, bhang lassi (do youtube search) which is basically mari-jane yogurt is used in religious ritual to aid in meditation & connect to God. Of course, getting hooked to pot, getting addicted, consuming it on a regular basis is a bad idea i think. these are just my opinion. no flames please.

Meditation is good i've always found it soothing I have not so far encountered any spirits of the sort but that which you would see through meditation would surely be a warming spirit of light, from what I have read they take many form many of which are of animals, usually known as the spirit guide.

music surely helps in addition to your emptying of mind. remember, you can easily come out of meditation mode when you want to. if you have not encountered spirits in your dream at night, i don't think you will see them in meditation.
