The Law of Attraction – Always?

I know from my own experience that the Law of Attraction is definitely a reality, and that we can take steps to harness its power to our own benefit and that of the people around us. This is very empowering, as millions of people around the world are discovering.

A view which is quite often expressed is that, through the Law of Attraction, we are responsible for everything which happens to us, good or bad – if disaster strikes, then we attracted it by our thoughts or actions, or both.

I certainly agree that a negative attitude in life can lead to undesired results, and doctors have shown a strong link between thinking, stress and disease. But this position has also attracted a fair degree of criticism (including in press reviews of The Secret) as being an attitude of ‘blame the victim’, devoid of understanding and compassion.

I too have struggled a bit with this, particularly in the case where, for example, a child is born with a severe handicap or disfigurement or suffers an accident at a young age – can it truly be said that they are responsible? Buddhists would say that it is the result of karma arising from actions in a previous life, and I suppose that this could be extended to thoughts in a previous life, but this can be difficult to accept.

But is it possible that, in the complexity of the Universe, there is also randomness, the effect of which is to deliver unexpected events? Or might it be that, there is complete and total order but at a larger scale – the ‘big picture’ view – while on a second-by-second level of human existence, there is a fair degree of unpredictability? Perhaps, by harnessing the Law of Attraction, we have a high degree of influence over what happens, but not as much control as we might like to believe.

This is a challenging area and I don’t have a definite view at this point. I would be very interested to know what you think.

Regards
Chris

PS Don’t get me wrong – I’m not negative about the Law of Attraction, and I encourage everyone to practice using it with positive intention to their greater good. But I think that there’s more to discover…
