How Strong is the Power of Place?
How Strong is the Power of Place?
Recently I was thinking about the extent to which we as human beings are affected by our environment and how we can also be independent of it.
On the face of it, it’s easy to believe that we will generally feel better if we are in a beautiful place, close to nature, away from the noise and pollution of the urban sprawl. And perhaps that is generally the case when we are on vacation, ‘getting away from it all’, when we are not only in a more pleasant environment but are also away from the stress of the workplace. But life’s not that simple, and there’s not necessarily a direct link between the place where we are and how we feel, especially if all is not right in our internal world.
I clearly remember a conversation I had with a European couple a few years ago. They had left their high-stress careers in advertising in a crowded capital city to run a dive centre on a small Indonesian island near Bali, a real paradise of white sand and palm trees.
Being on vacation from my own high-stress job, I was in a very good mood, and imagined that this couple must be leading an idyllic lifestyle, people to be envied.
Perhaps rather naively, I expressed these thoughts to them – and was brought down to earth with a bang! Their reaction was a mini-tirade of their worries and anxieties about money, the difficulty of running a business, whether they had made the right decision and whether they would ever be able to return to live in their country of origin. They seemed to be largely oblivious to their surroundings.
It made me realize that, wherever you are, you take yourself with you. This is why I now try to be self-disciplined enough to follow practices which calm my internal doubts and fears and make for contentment which is independent of place, so that the ‘self’ I take with me is stronger and better able to appreciate each day and each new situation.
At the time of meeting that couple on the island, I hadn’t heard of the work of Bob Proctor. If I met them again I would recommend that they read some of what he has written, particularly about how to use positive mental states and the Law of Attraction to bring happiness and fulfilment – regardless of where they are in the world. To help them achieve those positive mental states, I would steer them towards the Attraction Accelerator as a short-cut to deeper levels of focused relaxation.
I wonder if the synergy of the universe will steer them to this article?
Warmly,
Chris
