Law of Life - Change
Change is the law of life. And those who only look to the past or present are certain to miss the future. John F. Kennedy
It’s often said that the only true constant in life is change and that change is coming upon us at a faster and faster rate.
Day changes into night, the seasons change, we change cars, jobs, homes, partners, and countries so it is one word that we should be totally comfortable with.
But are we?
Stress is a term that we all come to hear more and more every day and it seems one of the greatest creators of stress is change. When people move house, change jobs, change partners stress levels rise it is important that we understand that change is an option and we can either accept the changes as they happen and grow and prosper with them or fight them and find ourselves left behind.
It is either change or be changed.
There are different types of change. Internal and external.
External changes occur in the world around us and we have little if any control over it. For example technology changes so fast and quickly that as soon as we bought the latest and greatest gizmo it is already out of date and a new updated version or model is available.
Internal change is the type of change we do have control over. This is the way we respond to the external changes. These include changes in our attitude, diet, as to whether we drink, smoke, take exercise, whether we embrace life long learning and whether we see opportunities in change or whether we only see threats in change.
It has been said that if we are going to create long term and lasting internal change we must be responsible for it ourselves and not rely on others to impose it on us. Firstly not only must we believe that something must change not that it should change or ought to change. It is a must. Next we have to believe that not only must we change something but that we must change it ourselves. We must see ourselves as the source of change otherwise we’ll continually be looking for somebody else to make the changes for us. We will always look for somebody else to blame when things don’t work out.
We must be the source of our change if it is to last.
